Through rain or shine, you can’t beat a brisk wee walk in the Scottish countryside. We think there’s nothing better than heading off for a walk, and getting back to a relaxing cuppa in one of our cosy Red Deer Village homes.

Being based in Stepps, we’re so grateful to be in such close proximity to a number of short walks, and longer hiking trails. Whether you’re a seasoned walker, or you’re strapping on your boots for the first time, there are a number of top tips to remember to make sure your outing is fun and safe!

Preparation

Planning is key to a comfortable and enjoyable walk. Think ahead about what you plan to do, and what the weather is going to be like. Is there somewhere to eat, or are you bringing a picnic? What route are you taking, and how long are you planning on being out for?

Health & Safety

First and foremost, you know in yourself how healthy you are. This should help you to make an informed decision as to what difficulty of walk you are able to take on. It’s great to have a goal, but never push yourself further than your body is comfortable with!

The equipment you bring and what you wear are really important. Before setting off, make sure you have everything you need. If you’re a little unsteady on your feet, for example, you might want to bring a walking pole/stick for support. If you’re planning on heading out somewhere you haven’t been before, or for a full day, it’s advisable to mention to someone where you’re going – just in case.

In terms of clothing, we all know the changeability of Scottish weather. It’s always better to layer up with warm clothes, as well as having your waterproofs and sunglasses packed too. Your footwear is also extremely important. There’s nothing worse than getting an hour or so into a walk, and feeling your boots start to rub. If you’re buying new boots make sure they’re well worn in, and wear thick walking socks too.

What To Bring

Make a list of what you’re going to need in your bag on the walk. No matter how long you are planning to be out for, as a bare minimum you’ll need:

  • Water
  • Snacks – e.g. fruit, nuts
  • Map
  • Basic first aid kit
  • Charged mobile and extra charger
  • Sun lotion
  • Insect repellent

There’s also a few items that might be useful to leave in your car (if you’re driving), such as a towel, spare clothes/shoes, a flask of hot drink and extra food.

Furthermore, if you’re going to be heading somewhere particularly picturesque, then make sure to take a camera!

Group Walks

If walking is something you are really keen to get into, it’s even better as a group activity! Not only is it a great opportunity to chat to friends and family, or make new friends, but the views you’ll take in are much better shared.

Ramblers, for example, is one of the largest walking organisations in Britain. There are groups all over the country welcoming new walkers of a range of abilities.

Walking is a great way to exercise and you’ll feel all the better for a breath of fresh air. So take advantage of Spring and Summer coming our way and get out in the beautiful Scottish countryside!
